ACTION 3.2

Adjust plans using formative assessment practices

Mindset Shift

We used to think...

Benchmark assessment data should be collected several times a year in order to demonstrate the growth a student has made.

Now we know...

Data is an integral and ongoing part of literacy instruction, and teachers should be well-equipped to respond to ongoing data by adjusting instruction.

Best Practice Strategies

To cultivate a supportive multi-language learning environment:

Teachers

  • Give equal attention and consideration to assessment of oral language and oral language fluency as assessment of literacy skills.

  • Consistently listen and talk to students as they are reading, and discuss what they are reading.

  • Create data-based flexible grouping strategies that allow responding to changing needs for instruction and intervention.

  • Use assessments to identify needed cross-linguistic support and instruction.

  • Use daily, formative assessments to determine in-the-moment adjustments and ongoing information to scaffold instruction, including how students are using language within play and natural interactions.

  • Provide individual students with language/literacy-focused SMART goals that are measured via progress monitoring.

  • Consistently review ROI to determine if support instruction is effective and adjust instruction if ROI is not sufficient.

  • Monitor progress frequently, on a weekly or biweekly basis, because instructional support is targeted and ongoing. Use appropriate measures for progress monitoring

  • Use tracking systems and documents to support in:

    • Visualizing the needs within their classroom in efforts to group students.

    • Understanding individual student needs in effort to target instruction

    • Documenting progress as students demonstrate proficiency in response to targeted instruction.

    • Supporting student agency

This intervention document will support teachers to plan for small groups and target skills

Class Analysis Sheet
Anna Lee-Villarreal, Design Group

This class analysis sheet allows teachers to gather their data to formulate groups for small groups. This form is best used after a phonics screener has been completed. Teachers could list students based on where students follow within their phonics instructional level.

Simple Progress Monitoring Template
Heather Mann, Design Group

This is a simple template that can be used as an example or as a tool to use for progress monitoring. It includes space for data entry as well as prefilled calculations for graphed results.

Basic Phonics Skills Test (BPST)
California Reading & Literature Project

Basic Phonics Test use to progress monitor, group students, and better target instruction to meet needs of all students. Teachers can use this to group students for based on phonics need: do students need support in letter recognition/sounds, blending CVC words, reading blends and digraghs, etc. Though most beneficial in primary grades, this could be an extremely useful tool for ML's in upper grades to highlight areas of need.
